Before You Come

Home >> New to Canada >> Before You Come
  • Step 1: Housing and Airport pick up
  • Step 2: Preparing documents
  • Step 3: Taking off
A) Housing Plan where you will stay during your first days in Canada. Make arrangements to stay with family or friends or book a hotel. If you do not have family or friends in Canada that you can stay with, one option is to stay at a hotel, hostel or book a room on internet through travel agencies or Airbnb. Beware of very cheap accommodations as they may be located in unpleasant areas or be of a very low standard.

B) Airport pickup To travel from the airport to your first accommodation, you can pre-book airport pickup service from different sources, e.g. online, schools, or homestay guardians. Alternatively, there are 3 other options: - Using available taxi service at the airport. - Using Uber apps to book a taxi from the airport. In Canada, Uber do NOT take CASH but ONLY accept DEBIT/CREDIT card - Using public transport available at the airport
Collect and bring to Canada all official documents belonging to you and the family members who are immigrating with you. Common documents include:
  • Passport with Entry Visa
  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage certificate or related documents
  • Educational certificates and transcripts
  • Medical record if required
  • Driver Licence
Note: Some of these documents may not be required immediately, but it is better to bring all your official documents with you in case they are needed or useful in the future. If the original documents are not in English or French (Canada’s official languages), you will need to obtain certified translations. If you are immigrating to Quebec, it is best to translate the documents into French. Otherwise (except in the officially bilingual province of New Brunswick), it is generally most useful to translate the documents into English. When presenting your documents to Canadian officials, always provide the original, the certified translation, and the name and contact information of the translation agency. Documents can be translated from English to French or from French to English in Canada. If you have family members that will be immigrating at a later date, you should bring copies of their documents with you as well.
